Universities

A university is an academic institution of higher learning where numerous qualifications are offered. There are different kinds of universities, namely; universities of technology, traditional universities and comprehensive universities. University is another study option you can look into when considering furthering your studies.

There are 3 types of universities in South Africa:

University of Technology

Universities of technology are formerly known as technikons. A university of technology, in addition to the basic responsibilities of a university institution, focuses largely on technological innovations in all spheres of research and human interest. There are numerous qualifications one can do at a university of technology the entry level qualifications are generally higher certificates or diplomas. The one quality that distinguishes university of technology education is its emphasis on practical work and technological advancement. There is a good mix of theory and practice but more emphasis is put on practice.

Traditional University

A university is a higher education learning institution that provides a wide range of theory intensive education with emphasis on academic knowledge and research. There are numerous qualifications you can obtain at a university but the entry level qualifications are generally bachelors’ degree.

Comprehensive University

Comprehensive universities are universities that offer the types of qualifications offered in universities and universities of technology.

Universities in South Africa

There are 26 universities in South Africa, you can apply to study at any of them, acceptance is not guaranteed. Different institutions have different application procedures, it is important to find out how you can apply at your institution of choice. In addition to this, there are numerous ways you can enter university, you can also do so through Mature Age exemption or Recognition of Prior Learning.

  • Mature Age Exemption

    The general definition of a mature applicant is someone who is atleast 23 years old before or during the year in which he/she wishes to enrol for a formal programme. Another category of mature candidates refers to people older than 45 years who did not follow the secondary school route in the South African schooling system and aspire to enter higher education. Such candidates may apply for conditional matriculation exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa for entering formal programmes at South African universities.

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

    RPL refers to a formulised evaluation and acknowledgement of relevant knowledge and skills that a mature learner has gained other than through formal study. This may also include assessment of work and life experience relevant to the learning programme considered.
