4. edX: Similar to Coursera, edX offers free online courses from prestigious universities, though you can also pay for certificates if desired

5. Khan Academy: Khan Academy is known for its extensive collection of free educational videos and exercises on various subjects, primarily focusing on basic education.

6. MIT OpenCourseWare: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) provides free access to course materials of their undergraduate and graduate-level classes.

7. Stanford Online: Stanford University offers a selection of free online courses across different disciplines.

8. Harvard Online Learning: Harvard University provides free online courses through HarvardX

9. Udemy: While Udemy is primarily a paid course platform, they also offer a selection of free courses on various topics.

10. FutureLearn: FutureLearn offers both free and paid courses from universities and institutions worldwide.

11. Codecademy: If you're interested in learning to code, Codecademy offers free interactive coding lessons.

12. YouTube: YouTube is a valuable resource for free educational content. Many educators and channels offer courses on a wide range of subjects.

Second Chance Matric Programme - 2024

The Second Chance Matric Programme of the Department of Basic Education (DBE) is for learners who

want to rewrite subjects. It helps them to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) and obtain a Grade 12 matric certificate.

When can you sit for NSC rewrite?

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) supplementary exams - March

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) progressed learners (learners who wrote the NSC the previous year but did not sit for all 6 subjects) - June

  • Part-time NSC candidates (learners who attempted the NSC examinations post 2015) - November

Understanding matric results
Here’s what you need to achieve to be able to receive the following pass levels:

National Senior Certificate

The minimum requirements for a National Senior Certificate are the following:

  • At least 40% in 3 subjects (one of which needs to be your Home Language)
  • At least 30% in 3 subjects

Please note: for all other matric passes, you will need to achieve this minimum.

What do These Matric Symbols mean?

Now that you know all of the different kinds of matric symbols, let’s talk about what each one means and where it can get you.

  • Higher Certificate Pass: This will gain you provisional entrance into any College or certificate course.
  • Diploma Pass: This will gain you provisional entrance into the university of technology or diploma course.
  • Bachelors Degree Pass: This will gain you a provisional entrance into any University or degree course.

It’s important to realize that each of the matric symbols gives you a provisional entrance. Depending on what you would like to study, each course may have its own requirements. What this means is that if you receive a diploma pass – you can study towards a diploma or a certificate, while achieving a bachelor’s pass means you will be able to study towards a degree, certificate, and diploma.

Higher Certificate Pass

To gain a higher certificate, you will need to:

  • Meet the minimum requirements for an NSC (this includes at least 40% for your Home Language)
  • Note: You will need to obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching at the higher education institution ( this will either be English or Afrikaans)
Diploma Pass

In order to receive a diploma pass, you will need to achieve the following:

  • Meet the minimum requirements for an NSC (this includes at least 40% for your Home Language)
  • At least 40% for four subjects.
  • Note: you will need to obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching at the higher education institution (this will either be English or Afrikaans)
Bachelors Degree Pass

In order to receive a Bachelors Degree pass, you need to achieve the following:

  • Meet the minimum requirements for an NSC (this includes at least 40% for your Home Language)
  • At least 50% for four subjects.
  • Note: you will need to obtain at least 30% for the language of learning and teaching at the higher education institution ( this will either be English or Afrikaans).

Presidential Employment Stimulus programme (Youth Employment Opportunities)

In helping to draw more young people into the economy, the government has under the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention initiated various youth development and empowerment initiatives to support young people. 

1. Social Employment Fund

  • Wits Health Consortium: Aims to train up to 200 health advocates as community health workers each year
  • Ford Resource and Engagement Centre (FREC) through Future Families is a micro business development centre that assists Entrepreneurs
  • Lima Rural Development Foundation supports agriculture and food security projects
  • Seriti works in communities to hone capabilities in tandem with its social partners and community champions to create work opportunities; alleviate poverty and inequality; strengthen caregivers; and nurture stronger, food secure, resilient economically viable communities and township enterprises.
  • Small Projects Foundation is an NGO based in East London to provide 3 000 youth service opportunities in youth service for Health and Education Services.
  • Siyavuna trains smallholder rural farmers in under-resourced communities in the Ugu and Umdoni District
  • Afrika Tikkun  provides development solutions including education, health, nutrition, personal development and skills development for young people
  • The Craft + Design Institute offers a range of activities that help improving creative businesses
